The game is played by two opposing teams that alternate batting and fielding. Each cycle of batting and fielding completes an inning and the game is decided after nine innings. The fielding team pitches to the batting team. The goal of the batting team is to safely move players around the bases and returning home which scores runs. The number of runs scored is how the winner of the game is determined. If a batting player receives three strikes while batting, then the player is out. Additionally, if a hit is caught in midair or if the ball is thrown to the base before the player reaches it, the player is also out. Once three outs have been recorded by the fielding team, the squads change roles.

Although there are baseball leagues across the world, the most famous is Major League Baseball in the United States. This league baseball team sports are comprised of a total of thirty teams, twenty-nine of which are American and one, the Toronto Blue Jays, that is located in Canada. These teams are split between the American and National Leagues and further segregated into geographically-based divisions. To determine a yearly league baseball team sports champion, the thirty teams play a regular season composed of 162 games. This season will be the basis of baseball’s playoff structure. The teams with the best records at the end of the season compete against each other in a series of games, culminating in the American and National League Championships and finally in the World Series. The World Series is a group of games between the two league champions. The first team to win four games is the Major League Baseball Champion. In 2009, the World Series was played between the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies, with the Yankees taking the title.
